Report of the Holy Journey of the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a to the Ancestral City of Sighet

Sunday, Parshas Terumah

In the early morning hours, the Rebbe shlit"a studied Torah privately for several hours in the sefarim room in his holy home. The Rebbe shlit"a also reviewed the pamphlet of chiddushim that was published by the talmidim of our holy yeshiva in Yerushalayim, in which the bochurim innovated and commented on the Rebbe's chiddushim in Lev Aharon on the sugya of "Rabbi Akiva Tlas," and which the Rebbe later praised before the yeshiva's menahel.

Already from 8:00 in the morning, the upper yeshiva was packed with hundreds of bochurim for a two-hour seder, per the holy directive of the Rosh Yeshiva, the Rebbe shlit"a, despite the fact that on Motzei Shabbos they had finished very late.

At about 10:20 the Rebbe shlit"a entered the beis medrash for Shacharis. Before davening, the Rebbe put tefillin on a bar mitzvah bochur.

After davening, a light breakfast was set up in the beis medrash for the bochurim.

After a few minutes the Rebbe shlit"a entered the completely packed beis medrash and delivered another shiur on the sugya. The Rebbe began with a question that a talmid of the yeshiva ketana in Bnei Brak had sent him in writing regarding the Friday shiur. The Rebbe repeated the question and offered a beautiful answer based on an Ohr Chadash, and instructed all the bochurim to look into the Ohr Chadash in the kovtzim on the sugya.
The Rebbe then continued with a longer pilpul on the sugya, and at the end delivered words of farewell to the bochurim, expressing how much spiritual pleasure and nachas ruach they had in spending the last three days and nights with the bochurim. "One sees 'a seed blessed by Hashem'; this is what the talmidim of the Yeitev Lev look like. This is the yeshiva that the Yeitev Lev founded, and one must take care to continue to conduct oneself in a manner fitting for a talmid of this yeshiva. The Yeitev Lev said that he would not be ashamed of his talmidim 'in this world and in the next.'" The Rebbe explained that "in this world" means when the Yeitev Lev was in this world, and "in the next" means those who come here to learn in the Yeitev Lev's yeshiva when the Yeitev Lev is already in the World to Come. The Rebbe urged the bochurim not to talk while wearing tefillin, and to learn with added vigor for long, uninterrupted hours from Rosh Chodesh until Purim. He concluded with abundant blessings, that they should travel home in peace, see each other in joy, and hear only good tidings.

Afterwards the bochurim went up to the holy ziyun of the Kedushas Yom Tov zy"a, on the eve of his yahrzeit. Then a generous breakfast was prepared. At about 2:15 the bochurim boarded the buses and left the ancestral city of Sighet, the talmidim from Eretz Yisroel to Baia Mare, and the talmidim from Europe to Satmar, from where they took chartered flights on the way home, taking with them abundant influence, hands full of Torah and yiras Shamayim, chizuk and guidance in all areas of life, which will accompany them for a lifetime.

In the afternoon the Rebbe received the city officials, the governor and the mayor of the area, who stand ready to help in all matters, particularly regarding the areas belonging to the shul courtyard, in the past and in the future, so that the new buildings can be built. The Rebbe thanked them and presented a gift, and they brought a gift in return for the Rebbe's home.

Afterwards the Rebbe shlit"a davened Mincha in his holy home with a small minyan.

After Mincha, a foundation ceremony for the new Heichal HaTorah of our holy kehilla in Manchester took place in his holy home, where the distinguished philanthropist R' Chaim Yosef Greenfeld, together with his son-in-law R' Shmuel Benedikt, undertook to build a magnificent Heichal HaTorah.
Besides the first major donation for the new Heichal from the distinguished philanthropist R' Asher Zelig Lev, builder and founder of the Heichal HaTorah in London, several other philanthropists have now pledged fresh, large donations in honor of the great building.

The Rebbe signed the documents and warmly bestowed his holy blessings, and said in Lashon Kodesh: "A Heichal HaTorah in our beis medrash will, IY"H, change Manchester."
Afterwards an appointment ceremony took place, in which the Rebbe shlit"a appointed 3 new morei tzedek in our holy kehilla in Yerushalayim.

The distinguished talmidei chachamim, outstanding and God-fearing, among the select of our holy kehilla: HaGaon Rabbi Shmuel Eckstein shlit"a, moreh tzedek of the Eida HaChareidis and one of the rabbanim of our kollel; HaGaon Rabbi Shlomo Bennett shlit"a, one of the heads of our kollel; and HaGaon Rabbi Moshe Yosef Spielman shlit"a, one of the heads of our kollel.

The Rebbe explained the verse "These are the laws that you shall place before them," that "these" adds to the earlier ones: the kehilla has, Baruch Hashem, grown and there is a need to add strength to the kehilla. Besides the fact that the kehilla has a very distinguished dayan shlit"a, there is a need, Baruch Hashem, to add more morei tzedek who will engage with the distinguished young men and give shiurim on all parts of Shulchan Aruch. In this connection the Rebbe urged the establishment of a beis hora'ah, "from which Torah and halachic ruling will go forth," and concluded with his holy blessings.

The Rebbe drank a lechayim and warmly wished the new morei hora'ah "that no stumbling block should come from under their hands, and to rule the word of Hashem, this is the halacha," as well as the members of the kehilla's administration: R' Yissachar Jacob, R' Nosson Binyomin Roth, R' Aharon Hersh Heilbrunn, and especially the distinguished philanthropist R' Avrohom Yehoshua Heshel HaKohen Glantz, the "Ish Yerushalayim" of New York.
Afterwards the entire crowd left, and the Rebbe remained privately with the morei hora'ah and gave various directives to the new morei hora'ah.

Afterwards there was entry time for the hundreds of Yidden, new guests from around the world, for an extended period until 10:15 at night.

At about 10:15 the Rebbe shlit"a davened Maariv, and then continued to bless the crowd until 11:00. The Rebbe then learned privately from the sefer Kedushas Yom Tov.

Afterwards the Rebbe shlit"a entered the shulchan arba'ah in honor of the hilula kadisha of his ancestor, our master and teacher, the holy Kedushas Yom Tov zy"a. The Rebbe washed for the seudah and wished lechayim, and several nigunim composed and sung in Sighet were sung, the Eishes Chayil nigun, the Nenuim nigun, and more.

With a "Michtam L'Dovid," the Rebbe honored the grandson of the baal hahilula, HaGaon Rabbi Lipa Teitelbaum shlit"a, dayan of our kehilla in Antwerp.

The Rebbe shlit"a said a longer, warm Torah and said that he is certain that the Kedushas Yom Tov blesses all Yidden, and that the Kedushas Yom Tov said that his blessing is not a wasted blessing, not only now but for the future as well, and concluded with warm blessings for Jewish children. Afterwards the Rebbe shlit"a recited the blessing over the cup.

After the shulchan arba'ah the Rebbe shlit"a continued with entry time until the late night hours.

That Hashem Should Remember Us With Mercy and Bless Them Upon Their Coming to My Home

Shabbos Kodesh Parshas Mishpatim — Shekalim, Shabbos Mevarchim Chodesh Adar, the Shabbos before the holy hilula of our master and teacher, the Holy Rebbe, the Kedushas Yom Tov zy"a, B'tzeil HaKodesh with the continuer of the dynasty of the House of Etz HaTamarim, the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a, in the city of the forefathers, Sighet, Romania, during the holy journey and the Shabbos of "Yeshiva Shel Maalah."

With holy trepidation, excitement and great spiritual elevation, the uplifting, historic Shabbos of "Yeshiva Shel Maalah" was held, a Shabbos Kodesh resembling the World to Come, with the leader of the congregation of Yeshurun, the great Rosh Hayeshiva, the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a, together with close to 400 talmidim from the 6 holy yeshivos of Eretz Yisroel and Europe, who for the first time merited to experience an elevated Shabbos B'tzeil HaKodesh, where the Rebbe descended from the mountain to the people and spent many hours with the talmidim from abroad, in the very place where his forebears, our holy Rebbes of Etz HaTamarim zy"a, davened, where our holy Rebbes carried out their holy service for many years, particularly in teaching Torah to talmidim.

It is difficult, and there are no words, to convey the elevated feelings of the hundreds of talmidim of "Yeshiva Shel Maalah" after experiencing this uplifting Shabbos Kodesh, which will accompany them for many years. Nevertheless, for the benefit of the public, the thousands of our fellow chassidim, we will try to report only the events and honors that took place throughout the Shabbos B'tzeil HaKodesh.

On Erev Shabbos, at candle-lighting time, the Rebbe shlit"a lit the Shabbos Kodesh candles in the Heichal of the Etz HaTamarim beis medrash.

About 15 minutes after the time, a derasha to open Shabbos was delivered to all the bochurim by HaGaon Rabbi Lipa Teitelbaum shlit"a, dayan of our holy kehilla in Antwerp.

On Friday night at about 6:20, the Rebbe shlit"a entered the beis medrash wrapped in his tallis, approached the amud for Mincha, and prolonged it for some time with awesome weeping and great arousal. Kabbalas Shabbos was led by HaGaon Rabbi Yoshe Klein shlit"a, director of our holy yeshiva in Yerushalayim. Mizmor LeDovid Havu LaHashem was said verse by verse, following the custom of the holy community of Sighet.

After davening, the Rebbe shlit"a went up to the Aron Kodesh and, with a radiant countenance, wished a good Shabbos to all the talmidim on all sides of the beis medrash.

Afterward HaGaon Rabbi Yoel Kellner shlit"a, director of our holy yeshiva in Manchester, led and announced the sedarim throughout the Shabbos.

Immediately afterward, all the bochurim went down to the dining hall to review the sedra, and then a wonderful shiur was given by HaGaon Rabbi Yoel Langberg shlit"a, maggid shiur in our holy yeshiva in London.
Meanwhile, the beis medrash was set up for the occasion with platforms on all 3 sides so that all the bochurim could participate. At each person's place was prepared a splendid Zemiros booklet with the Imra Tevo'a LeShabbos Kodesh pamphlet, with special challah covers and the like.
The entire great beis medrash, from end to end, was set up with the hundreds of places packed closely together in a special manner so that everyone, without exception, could sit and take part from all sides.
At all 3 tables during the Shabbos Kodesh, the beis medrash was indeed filled to capacity, and everyone sat. The servers were only chassidic bochurim, "and no stranger shall mingle in our camp."

At about 9:10 the hundreds of bochurim came in; each was arranged in his place by a special system of cards by the esteemed directors, who distributed a special card to each one showing where his seat was. In addition, along the sides above, the Rebbe's attendants were arranged, along with the several generous donors who financed the Shabbos of "Yeshiva Shel Maalah."

At about 9:30 the Rebbe shlit"a entered for the Shulchan Aruch, which was conducted on an exceedingly elevated level, with great spiritual elevation and excitement, and it extended for close to 5 hours!

The Rebbe shlit"a began, in his holy manner, with Shalom Aleichem, with feeling, sweetness and burning fire.

Eishes Chayil: the Rebbe's grandson, the bochur Meir Eliezer ט"ב, son of HaGaon HaTzaddik, Rav of the beis medrash, Rabbi Berach Moshe shlit"a. Hagbahas HaKos: the Rebbe's grandson, the bochur Meir Eliezer ט"ב, ני"ו, of the Rebbe shlit"a, who made Kiddush and fulfilled the obligation for the entire congregation.

During the seudah, between the courses, before the fish, the soup, the meat, and after the meat, the Rebbe shlit"a said 4 Torah thoughts and explained the four categories of damages: shor, bor, mav'eh, and hev'er, with wonderful explanations in derush style, continuing from one Torah thought to the next, filled with mussar and chizuk.
During the tish, several niggunim were sung for long periods, and twice the chassidim stood up to dance fiery dances. They also sang several timely songs in Yiddish about the bond between Israel and our Father in Heaven during the days of Shovavim, with great arousal.

The Rebbe shlit"a honored people to lead the Zemiros. Kol Mekadesh: HaGaon Rabbi Pinchas Schlesinger shlit"a, director of our holy yeshiva in London. Menucha VeSimcha: HaGaon Rabbi Mordechai Yozef shlit"a, director of Yeshiva Gedola Maharit in Bnei Brak.

After the Zemiros, the Rebbe shlit"a delivered a longer Torah discourse on the sugya of shelo kederech hanaasan and "aseh lifnei hadibbur."

Kah Echsof: HaGaon Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Yakov shlit"a, director of the yeshiva ketana in Bnei Brak. Birkas Hamazon: HaGaon Rabbi Lipa Teitelbaum shlit"a, dayan of our kehilla in Antwerp, grandson of the Kedushas Yom Tov zy"a.

The Rebbe shlit"a related stories and episodes about his ancestor, our master and teacher, the Kedushas Yom Tov zy"a, whose yahrzeit falls on Monday, 29 Shevat.

Kah Ribon Olam: HaGaon Rabbi Yoel Kellner shlit"a, director of our holy yeshiva in Manchester.

After the fruit, bundles were brought in and joyous niggunim were sung in honor of the Shalom Zachor of the Rebbe's grandson, Rabbi Mordechai Yuda Halberstam shlit"a.

Ohr Panecha in honor of Shabbos Shekalim: HaGaon Rabbi Yoshe Klein shlit"a, director of our holy yeshiva in Yerushalayim, the holy city, which was sung with arousal and deveikus.

Az Beyom Hashvi'i: HaGaon Rabbi Yisroel Klein shlit"a, director of our holy yeshiva in Antwerp. Then they continued with Uvau Kulam and Naaseh VeNishma. It ended at about 2:05.

After the tish, the talmidim of Yeshiva Gedola Maharit in Bnei Brak came in as a group and engaged in pilpul with the Rebbe shlit"a on the sugya of shelo kederech hanaasan, on the Friday-morning shiur sugya, for a longer time, and the Rebbe greatly marveled at their knowledge and depth.

Also, HaGaon Rabbi Yosef Aron Israel shlit"a, maggid shiur in Yeshiva Gedola in Bnei Brak, brought a letter from his rebbi, the great Gaon Rabbi Dov Landau shlit"a, Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka, containing a chiddush on the sugya of shelo kederech hanaasan that he sent in honor of the Shabbos of "Yeshiva Shel Maalah." Having heard that the Rebbe would spend the Shabbos with the bochurim and be engaged in this sugya, in the letter he refers to the Shabbos Kodesh in Sighet, sends regards to the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a, and concludes with a blessing. In return, the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a sent back greetings and his holy blessing.

Although the yeshiva students arrived in Sighet late Thursday night, the learning schedule in the Yeshiva Shel Maalah began in the morning at 7:00, with the beis medrash packed to capacity. The Rosh Yeshiva, the Rebbe shlit"a, entered the beis medrash at around 7:45 and walked around for nearly a full hour, stopping at each and every table and engaging in pilpul with great nachas.

It was a majestic sight to see the great leader of Israel walking around, stopping for a minute at a table of Manchester, a minute by London and by Antwerp, young bochurim and older ones, at a table of Bnei Brak and by Yerushalayim. Everyone had a chance to speak. The Rebbe listened to the bochurim and debated and engaged in pilpul over the topics they were learning.

At around 9:30 the Rebbe shlit"a entered for Shacharis davening. The Rebbe put on the tefillin of the bar mitzvah bochur, the bochur Yuda Glick (Antwerp), before davening, and also laid the tefillin in the beis medrash.

After davening, the Rebbe shlit"a went up to the Aron Kodesh and delivered the first sugya shiur, with a fiery passion in the sugya of "shelo kederech hanaasan" on Simchas Torah.
After the shiur the Rebbe shlit"a continued with words of praise and thanks to Hashem for the privilege of teaching Torah to students in the very place where his holy grandfathers taught Torah, spoke at length about all that took place in the spreading of Torah in this place, and concluded with his holy blessings.

Afterward a generous breakfast was served to the bochurim, and then all the bochurim went in to the Rebbe for a private audience and passed by like the angels on high, taking leave. The Rebbe received each one and inquired about him, and many bochurim asked questions on the sugya, to which the Rebbe replied to each one and discussed them with good reason and insight.
