Monday, Parshas Vayigash – Zos Chanukah

This morning a bris took place for the newborn son of R' Nesanel Landau, at which the Rebbe served as sandek and mohel.

The Rebbe davened Shacharis in Yeshiva Gedolah, Shiur Daled.
The Rebbe went up to Hallel and was called up as the third aliyah (Shlishi) during the Torah reading.

After davening, a lechayim gathering took place in the Heichal HaBeis Medrash.
Several niggunim were sung, and the Rebbe drank a lechayim and wished the Rebbeim and talmidei hayeshiva well. He imparted a blessing to all the bochurim, noting that Chanukah is an auspicious time for shidduchim, and wished shidduchim for all the bochurim.
Afterwards all the talmidei hayeshiva passed by, and the Rebbe distributed coins to all the bochurim.

The Rebbe then went out to the yeshiva courtyard for the burning of the wicks. The Rebbe lit the bonfire and threw in the wicks and the leftover oil from the Chanukah lights. A kvitel of kollelos from all the talmidei hayeshiva was handed to the Rebbe shlit"a. The Rebbe then danced on the spot for several minutes. It concluded at 12:50.

The Rebbe davened Mincha at around 4:30 in his home on Zanz Court.

After Mincha, at around 4:55, the Rebbe went over to the Talmud Torah building, "the former Palaczek building," for the shulchan hatahor in honor of Zos Chanukah together with the talmidim of Shiur Gimmel of the nine branches of the yeshivos ketanos of Mosdos Kiryas Yoel.
The Rebbe washed for the seudah, and the singing was prolonged with niggunim of Chanukah and the Yamim Noraim.
The Rebbe honored HaGaon R' Baruch Shlomo Weinberger shlit"a, the head administrator, with the recitation of Mizmor Shir Chanukas.

The Rebbe shlit"a delivered words of Torah, a lengthy drasha and pilpul on the topics of Chanukah, and then continued with guidance, bringing out that a quarter of the year has already passed and that one must make a cheshbon hanefesh about how one has improved: in Torah learning, in good middos, and in yiras shamayim. He strongly encouraged the bochurim to engage in Torah study with diligence and to understand what they learn, and concluded with abundant blessings.
For bentching, the Rebbe honored HaGaon R' Wolf Landau shlit"a, menahel of the Rav Tuv branch of the yeshiva. It concluded at around 6:30. Afterwards the Rebbe davened Maariv together with the bochurim.

In the evening the Rebbe officiated at the kiddushin at the chuppah of the mechutanim:
- HaRav R' Avrohom Yitzchak Landau and HaRav R' Binyon Avrohom Cohen in the Kinor David halls.
- HaRav R' Shmuel Feuerstein and HaRav R' Meir Yehuda Eisenbach in the Beis Rachel Paradise halls.

The times for entry for kvitlach were from 7:30 until 12:00 at night in the Rebbe's home on Ohel Court.

During the entry times, the Rebbe read the tenaim of the mechutanim R' Shimon Herskovits and R' Aharon Yosef Landau in the tenaim hall at his home.

The Night of Zos Chanukah 'B'tzeil HaKodesh' with the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a

The Rebbe davened Maariv at around 6:00. Before Maariv, the bochur Lipa, son of R' Yoel Goldberger shlit"a, lit the menorah, and after Maariv the entire assembly went over to receive a holy blessing in honor of Zos Chanukah.

At around 9:30 the Rebbe shlit"a entered the Large Beis Medrash for the lighting of the Chanukah candles, in the presence of thousands upon thousands of chassidim. The Rebbe poured in the oil and recited the blessings of the lighting with holy fire.

Afterward the Rebbe recited the zemiros, and inspiring nigunim were sung, and the choir sang the piyutim as is customary. At the end R' Shlomo Hersh Eckstein sang Mizmor Shir Chanukas as is customary, after which the Rebbe distributed coins to the children of the choir.

The Rebbe shlit"a went up to the holy tish, and the singing of inspiring nigunim continued for a longer time, and the Rebbe shlit"a delivered the first holy discourse, words of derush and pilpul on the sugya in Maseches Shabbos on "kavsa zakuk lah."

Afterward the uplifting gathering continued with song and music, with several inspiring nigunim, as the Rebbe shlit"a delivered four more holy discourses, with lengthier words of aggadah and chassidus.
The second holy discourse was on the verse "Vetavoach tevach vehachein," explaining that the eight days of Chanukah correspond to the eight days until a bris milah. When the covenant is guarded, it brings abundant livelihood and faith in Hashem. On Zos Chanukah we read the offering of the prince of the tribe of Menashe, and Menashe has the numerical value of "parnassah" (livelihood), which is an allusion to the festive meals held on Chanukah. The gathering continued with nigunim of inspiration and faith.

The third holy discourse offered a reason why it is called Zos Chanukah. When Aharon HaKohen lit the menorah, his task was "El mul penei hamenorah yairu shivas haneiros" (the seven lamps shall illuminate toward the front of the menorah). Opposite the menorah stood the table, and Aharon HaKohen brought down livelihood for all of Klal Yisroel as he lit the menorah. From the menorah there is proof that Hashem must first bestow material blessings, and is obligated to bestow livelihood and health upon Klal Yisroel. The gathering continued with nigunim of inspiration.

The fourth holy discourse offered a reason why it is called Zos Chanukah. When the princes dedicated the Mishkan, they davened not only for the present, but that the blessings should continue "after it was anointed." Chanukah is the time when one must daven to be upright, and one must plead for himself, his children and his grandchildren, and so we will merit "lo yamushu mipicha" (they shall not depart from your mouth) and so on, "from now and forever." The gathering continued with the nigunim "Vihi Zarei" and "Vehair Eineinu" and others, while the Rebbe wept at length.

The fifth holy discourse offered a reason why it is called Zos Chanukah. Chanukah is from the word chinuch, since Chanukah is an education and a preparation for the coming of Moshiach. Rabbeinu Gershom is called "Meor HaGolah" (Light of the Exile) because of his two decrees: that one may not divorce a woman against her will, and that one may not marry two wives. From the miracle of Chanukah we see that Hashem upholds all the decrees of Chazal. Since the impurity of the oil was only a rabbinic matter, Hashem cannot send away Klal Yisroel and also cannot take another nation, and He will soon redeem Klal Yisroel from exile. The Rebbe also bestowed abundant blessings upon the entire assembly.
The Rebbe then continued, regarding the Kol Mamon, that on these holy days one opens with three matters, and Chanukah is opened with "Kavu shir u'renanim" (they established song and praise). He asked the musicians to begin nigunim of joy, to give thanks and praise.

Nigunim of joy and thanksgiving began, and the Rebbe broke into a festive dance for an extended time, and then continued to encourage the fervent dancing of the thousands of assembled for a long while.

The gathering ended at around 12:15, and the Rebbe went home to his holy residence.

At the Rebbe's holy residence, the singers and those engaged in holy work in our holy courts entered for a gathering, as did the bochurim who lead the nigunim at the weekly holy tish. The Rebbe distributed coins and bestowed his holy blessing.

The Rebbe davened Maariv at about 6:00 in his holy home. Before Maariv, the young man Baruch Mordechai, son of Naftali Moshe Weiss, lit the menorah.

At about 9:05 the Rebbe shlit"a entered the great beis medrash for the lighting of the Chanukah lights, before a large crowd, in regal splendor. The Rebbe poured in the oil and recited the blessings for the lighting.
Afterwards the Rebbe said the zemiros while the congregation sang stirring melodies, and then the choir sang the piyutim as is customary.

The Rebbe shlit"a delivered holy words of Torah discourse and analysis on the sugya in Maseches Shabbos regarding "kavsa zekuk lah," and then continued in the vein of aggadah, explaining that through teshuva out of love, or through performing a transgression for the sake of Heaven, one brings about the downfall of the wicked. The Chashmonaim, in the merit of the mitzvah of tzitzis, which is a transgression for the sake of Heaven since one transgresses "do not wear shatnez," brought about the downfall of the wicked and merited victory in the war.
The Rebbe continued that today as well, we must reach the level of bringing about the downfall of the wicked, especially regarding the decree against chinuch in New York, where the wicked are "like a stormy sea" that cannot rest, and they continue onward and have gone to court against our pure chinuch. The lighting of the Chanukah lights will bring about their downfall, and we will succeed in continuing the chinuch handed down to us from generation to generation. The Rebbe concluded with abundant blessings for the entire assembly.

After the holy words, they continued singing niggunim. The Rebbe drank lechayim and wished blessings to the assembly. They concluded at about 10:30.

Afterwards the Rebbe went over to Mivtzar HaKollelim for the annual chizuk gathering of the "Chaburas Leil Shishi." Several stirring niggunim were sung, and HaRav R' Hershel Kohn shlit"a, one of the leaders of the chabura, spoke.
The Rebbe drank lechayim and gave blessings to the entire assembly, and delivered holy words of chizuk on the importance of telling stories of tzaddikim from earlier tzaddikim. He learned aloud a passage from the holy sefer Noam Elimelech about telling stories of tzaddikim, and spoke at length in praise of the chaburos that gather regularly to learn chassidic seforim and tell stories of tzaddikim, which is the only thing that can sustain us in such a materialistic generation. He concluded with his holy blessing.
They concluded at about 11:00.
