Leil Wednesday, Chol HaMoed — Ushpizin of Yosef: 'B'tzeil HaKodesh' with the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a

The Rebbe davened Maariv at around 9:10 in his holy home on Zanz Street, Kiryas Joel.
Before Maariv, the Rebbe lit candles in honor of the yahrzeit of the Rebbetzin Rochel a"h, wife of the Chaver of the Beirach Moshe's... of the Gaon and Tzaddik, the Baal Yitev Lev zy"a.

The Rebbe entered for the holy seudah in the great sukkah at around 11:20. The Rebbe recited the Ushpizin order and washed; the dishes were served as on Yom Tov. The ushpizin sponsors placed wine, and after the meat course they served kugels, and the Rebbe distributed shirayim.

With the Shir HaMaalos, the Rebbe honored:
- HaGaon R' Yosef Leib Kahn shlit"a,
- HaRav HaTzaddik Rabbi Yisroel Leifer shlit"a of Wordan, Williamsburg.
- HaGaon R' Chaim Ari Kahana shlit"a, Rav of Beis Medrash Zichron Elimelech, Monsey.

The Rebbe delivered words of Torah on the verse "And of Yosef he said: Blessed by Hashem is his land," and explained that one must perform a mitzvah with enthusiasm and fire, and this sanctifies the body, and only in this way can one enter the sukkah, which is in the shadow of faith, "the house of Yosef a flame" — one must perform a mitzvah with a flame of fire, for kindling makes the mitzvah. He urged people to hold back from things that bring coldness into a person, spoke forcefully about the harm of unrefined melodies and dancing at weddings, and urged the bochurim and young men to stand guard to maintain the pure, honest melodies as in days of old. He concluded with abundant blessings.

For Bentching, the Rebbe honored the Rav of Beis Medrash Beis Chaim Yaakov shlit"a.
Afterward the Rebbe stood up and danced for an extended time in honor of Simchas Beis HaShoeivah. It ended at around 1:00.

Thursday — Wednesday... Chol HaMoed Sukkos

The Rebbe entered for Shacharis at around 10:20.
The Rebbe lit candles and recited Kaddish in honor of the yahrzeit of the Rebbetzin Rochel a"h.
- Baal tefillah: R' Yoel Hirsch.
The Rebbe proceeded to Hallel, carefully observed the holy service of the lulav shaking, and then recited the Hoshanos.

- Petichah: R' Leibish Frankel (Monsey).
- Kohen: Rabbi Moshe Kahana shlit"a (Monsey).
- Levi: R' Shalom Landau.
- Shlishi: the Rebbe's grandson HaGaon R' Zalman Teitelbaum shlit"a, Rav of Beis Medrash Beis Menachem Zev.
- Revii: the Rebbe shlit"a.
- Hagbah: the Rebbe's grandson Rabbi Asher Anshel Ashkenazi shlit"a (Manchester).
- Gelilah: R' Meir Yosef Gross shlit"a (Williamsburg).
After the Torah reading, close to a hundred new guests who came for Yom Tov Simchas Torah in the Rebbe's presence recited Birkas HaGomel.

- Mussaf: R' Akiva Weinstock.
It ended at around 1:00.

The Rebbe davened Mincha at around 5:45 in his holy home.

After Mincha, there was a visit with the Rebbe by the Rebbe, Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto shlit"a, head of the Shuvu Yisroel institutions. A pleasant conversation ensued about his institutions for baalei teshuva around the world. The Rebbe honored him with a lechayim, bestowed his holy blessing upon him, and accompanied him out to the street.

Also entering was the distinguished philanthropist R' Zalman Leib Kappel together with the board members of the Kiryas Joel mosdos, where he pledged a large sum for the new mosdos buildings now being built in Kiryas Joel. The distinguished philanthropist R' Zalman Leib handed over the entire sum on the spot, and the Rebbe warmly bestowed his holy blessing upon him.

The night of Tuesday of Chol HaMoed – Ushpizin of Aharon HaKohen – 'B'tzeil HaKodesh' with the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a

The Rebbe davened Maariv at around 8:10 in his holy home.

At around 11:00, HaGaon Rabbi Avrohom Shmuel Englander shlit"a, dayan of our holy kehilla in Lakewood, entered the Rebbe's room. A pleasant conversation took place about the halachos and minhagim of Yom Tov Sukkos, and about the great success of the Yeshiva Ketana, the Beirach Moshe branch in Lakewood, where the dayan shlit"a serves as rosh yeshiva. The Rebbe bestowed his holy blessing upon him.

The Rebbe entered the holy table in the large sukkah at around 11:15.
The Rebbe recited the Ushpizin order and washed. The foods were served as on Yom Tov, the Ushpizin hosts set out wine, and after the meat course the Ushpizin hosts served kugels, and the Rebbe distributed shirayim.

The Rebbe honored the following with the Shir HaMaalos:
- R' Moshe Gross shlit"a of Kerestir, Monsey.
- HaRav HaGaon R' Meshulam Nosson Spiegel shlit"a, rav of the Tefilah L'Moshe Kalashin beis medrash in Monsey.
- HaGaon Rabbi Avrohom Shmuel Englander shlit"a, dayan of our kehilla in Lakewood.

The Rebbe delivered divrei Torah on the verse "El mul pnei hamenorah yairu shivas haneiros" ("Toward the face of the Menorah shall the seven lamps shed light"), and explained that when Aharon HaKohen lit the Menorah, he bestowed both spiritual and material blessings. Since without material abundance it is difficult to fulfill all the mitzvos, wealth that comes as a blessing from Hashem Himself cannot harm and does not carry the test of wealth. The blessings that Aharon HaKohen bestowed, and that are drawn down through Birkas Kohanim, come from Hashem and bring only good. Likewise, the mitzvah of sukkah brings wealth, as explained in the holy sefarim, and this too comes from the shade of faith of Hashem Himself and is a powerful blessing. The Rebbe wished abundant blessings for the entire gathering.
The Rebbe continued and repeated from the Chasam Sofer that the reason we eat dairy foods on Yom Tov of Shavuos is that milk is good for all people, young and old, and from milk one can make various foods: from the best one makes sour cream, and from the weaker one makes cheese, etc. Similarly, the holy Torah was given to all of Klal Yisroel, young and old, and not only to the sour cream, the elite, but to everyone without exception. When Aharon HaKohen bestowed wisdom of the Torah at the lighting of the Menorah, he bestowed it upon all of Klal Yisroel; everyone whose soul desires Torah is entitled to come to the beis medrash. This is what Aharon HaKohen taught us, "to tell the praise of Aharon, that he did not change": that we must provide yeshivas for everyone and not only for the select few. And likewise that we must light "until the flame rises on its own"; we must light and kindle all the souls of Yisroel until the flame rises on its own and a flame ignites within the heart. The Rebbe concluded with abundant blessings for the entire gathering.

Immediately after the divrei Torah, the Rebbe went into his private room next to the sukkah together with the Gaon HaGadol, the dayan shlit"a. Several members of Hatzolah and other askanim were present, and they presented the latest developments regarding the pressing question that was awaiting the Rebbe's decision.
After some time, the Rebbe returned to the holy table and continued with the dancing.
- Birkas Hamazon: HaRav HaGaon R' Berel Glanz shlit"a of Bardiov.
They concluded at around 1:00.

A few minutes later, the Rebbe entered the large beis medrash for the grand Simchas Beis HaSho'eva, holy dancing by the chassidim and men of deed, elders together with youths. The Rebbe sat down on the honored platform, watched, and encouraged the dancing for a while. At around 1:25 the Rebbe left the beis medrash and went home to his holy residence.

Wednesday – Tuesday of Chol HaMoed Sukkos

After the Rebbe and the dayan shlit"a had gone through the matter and all its complicated halachic aspects during the night, in the early morning hours the Gaon HaGadol, the dayan shlit"a, came over together with HaRav HaGaon R' Yosef Hersh Soffer shlit"a, a moreh tzedek. They deliberated for a longer time and worked out the various sides of the issue. Then the Rebbe gave his holy opinion and psak halacha, together with the dayanim shlit"a, on the difficult, complicated question.

The Rebbe entered for Shacharis at around 10:45.
- Baal tefillah: R' Yuda Eliezer Gottesman.
The Rebbe proceeded to Hallel and performed the holy service of the naanuim, and afterwards recited the Hoshanos.
The Spinka Rebbe shlit"a was present at Hallel and the naanuim, and after the Hoshanos the Rebbe greeted him warmly and wished him his holy blessing.

- Kohen: grandson of the Rebbe, Rabbi Nachman Kahana shlit"a, son-in-law of HaGaon HaTzaddik, rav of the Beirach Moshe beis medrash shlit"a.
- Levi: R' Moshe Yaakov Aharon Levi.
- Shlishi: the baal bris, grandson of the Rebbe, Rabbi Shalom Yechezkel Shraga Rubin shlit"a, son-in-law of HaGaon HaTzaddik, rav of the Yisroel Shalom beis medrash shlit"a.
- Revii: the Rebbe shlit"a.
- Hagbah: HaRav HaGaon R' Chaim Dovid Rubin shlit"a, rav of the Ohel Torah beis medrash in Williamsburg.

After the Torah reading, dozens of guests who came for Simchas Torah b'tzeil hakodesh recited Birkas Hagomel.

They concluded at around 1:15.

After davening, the simcha of the bris milah took place in the hall of the beis medrash.
The Rebbe shlit"a was honored with the roles of sandek and mohel.
- Sandek standing: HaGaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Yekusiel Teitelbaum shlit"a.
- Brachos and naming: the grandfather, HaGaon HaTzaddik, Av Beis Din of Beis Aharon shlit"a. "V'yikarei shemo b'Yisroel": 'Moshe,' after the holy Rebbe, the Beirach Moshe zy"a.
After the bris, mazel tov wishes were extended to the Rebbe shlit"a.

A few minutes later, the Rebbe entered the seudas bris in the large sukkah. The Rebbe recited the Ushpizin order and washed for the seudah. At the seudah, the baal simcha, the father of the baby, Rabbi Shalom Yechezkel Shraga Rubin shlit"a, spoke.
- The Rebbe honored the following with the zemiros: R' Yoshe Chaim Rubin shlit"a and Rabbi Elchanan Rubin shlit"a.
- Shir HaMaalos: Rabbi Mordechai Dov Rubin shlit"a.
- Grandson of the Rebbe, Rabbi Mordechai Yuda Halberstam shlit"a.
- Rabbi Elchanan Chaim Teitelbaum shlit"a.
- Yom Levashah: Rabbi Yechiel Menachem Rubin shlit"a.

The Rebbe delivered divrei kodesh and explained the connection between the mitzvah of milah and the mitzvah of sukkah. When Avrohom Avinu circumcised himself, he placed a power of mesiras nefesh into his children and grandchildren until the end of all generations. The four species correspond to the four limbs of a person, and we shake them toward the four directions to show that we are ready to give over all our limbs to Hashem and ready to sacrifice ourselves for Hashem. The Rebbe concluded with abundant blessings.

Before bentching, the Ushpizin hosts served kugels in honor of Yom Tov, and the Rebbe distributed shirayim.
For bentching, the Rebbe honored the grandfather, HaGaon HaTzaddik, rav of the Yisroel Shalom beis medrash shlit"a, and the family members recited the Harachaman's. They concluded at around 2:40.

After the bris, HaGaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Yekusiel Teitelbaum shlit"a came for a Yom Tov visit. A pleasant conversation took place about the holy Sanzer Rav zy"a and about the minhagim of Yom Tov Sukkos, and the Rebbe bestowed his holy blessing upon him.

The Rebbe davened Mincha at around 7:10 in his holy home, at the Zanz Kehillah Ketana.
Between Mincha and Maariv there was an entry time for chassidim from overseas who came for Yom Tov of Simchas Torah b'tzeil hakodesh.

The Av Beis Din of Monsey shlit"a also entered the Rebbe's room after a shiur in the large beis medrash. A pleasant halachic conversation took place on several areas of Torah, and the Rebbe bestowed his holy blessing upon him.

Tuesday – Chol HaMoed Sukkos, Day Two: 'B'tzeil HaKodesh' with the Satmar Rebbe shlit"a

In the morning, the Rebbe put on tefillin in his holy home for the bar mitzvah bochur, the bochur Yaakov Yitzchak, son of R' Berel Stein.

The Rebbe entered for Shacharis at around 10:20.
- Baal tefillah: R' Elchanan Taub.
The Rebbe approached Hallel and observed the holy service of the Arba Minim (the shaking of the lulav), and afterwards recited the Hoshanos.

- Pesicha was given to R' Zalman Leib Klein (London).
- Baal koreh: the Rebbe's grandson, Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga Teitelbaum shlit"a, son of the HaGaon HaTzaddik, Rav of the Beis Medrash Beis Baruch shlit"a.
- Kohen: R' Naftali Hirtzka Kohn.
- Levi: HaGaon Rabbi Chaim Nachum Gottlieb shlit"a, moreh tzedek.
- Shlishi: the Rebbe's grandson, HaGaon Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Rokeach shlit"a, Rav of the Beis Medrash Kol Eliyahu.
- Revii: the Rebbe shlit"a.
- Hagbah: Rabbi Moshe Yosef Ashkenazi shlit"a (Monsey).
- Gelilah: R' Yoel Rotte (Yerushalayim).

After davening, a bris took place for the newborn son of R' Moshe Aryeh, son of R' Yisroel Gross, at which the Rebbe served as sandek.

At around 4:10, the Rebbe went over to the main beis medrash for the hachnasas sefer Torah celebration, a Torah scroll donated by his grandson Rabbi Chaim Hersh Teitelbaum shlit"a, l'iluy nishmas HaRav HaKadosh Rabbi Shalom Eliezer of Ratzfert zy"a.
The Rebbe took the Sefer Torah and danced with holy joy for an extended time, and honored the grandfathers, the Av Beis Din of Boro Park shlit"a, the Av Beis Din of Williamsburg shlit"a, and the Mashlau Rebbe shlit"a, to dance, and afterwards his grandson Rabbi Chaim Hersh shlit"a and his brother, the HaGaon HaTzaddik, Rav of our kehilla in Boro Park 15 shlit"a.
Afterwards the Rebbe recited L'Dovid Mizmor and said Kaddish. The event concluded at around 4:30.

A few minutes later the Rebbe entered the lechayim gathering in the main sukkah. Upon entering, the Rebbe danced in place, several nigunim were sung, and Rabbi Chaim Hersh shlit"a spoke.
The Rebbe drank lechayim and wished Rabbi Chaim Hersh shlit"a, his grandfathers the Rabbonim shlit"a, and the entire assembly well, and delivered words of Torah on the verse "u'l'chol hamora hagadol asher asah Moshe l'einei kol Yisroel" – "Bereishis bara Elokim," explaining that Moshe Rabbeinu brought down a great awe before the eyes of all Israel, "Bereishis," that the entire existence of the world is only because of the holy Torah. He said that this is fitting to say at a hachnasas sefer Torah l'iluy nishmas the holy Rebbe Rabbi Shalom Eliezer of Ratzfert zy"a, a son of the holy of holies, the holy Sanzer Rav zy"a, for whoever came to Sanz learned that the holy Torah is the existence of the world. He spoke of the attachment of our holy forebears and Rebbes to the holy Sanzer Rav zy"a, who would constantly speak of his holiness and avodas Hashem, and especially his father, the holy Rebbe, the Beirach Moshe zy"a, who grew up largely in Ratzfert. He expressed joy that his grandson feels a connection to Ratzfert and Sanz and donates a Sefer Torah for his elevation. He bestowed abundant blessings upon the baal simcha, that the merit of the forefathers should protect the entire family and that they should remain connected to the holy forefathers. He said that it is worthwhile for these holy tzaddikim zy"a to be able to protect and bestow all good on all those gathered and participating, and concluded with his holy blessing.
Several nigunim continued, and the event concluded at around 5:20.

At around 5:30, the Rebbe delivered words of Torah through a hookup to our chassidim in Bnei Brak at the Simchas Beis HaShoeivah gathering in honor of the ushpizin, Aharon HaKohen HaKadosh. The Rebbe said words of Torah in honor of Yom Tov Sukkos and expressed his pleasure at the good greetings that are regularly received from our kehilla and mosdos in Bnei Brak. He urged them to stand guard and uphold all the takanos that the founder of the neighborhood, the holy Divrei Yoel zy"a, established regarding matters of tznius and the like. He also greeted the distinguished philanthropist guests in Eretz Yisroel who committed to rebuilding the Talmud Torah building and beis medrash for the sake of Hashem's name and glory, and concluded with abundant blessings.

At around 5:45, a gathering was held in the Rebbe's presence with the Gaon HaGadol, the Dayan and Moreh Tzedek shlit"a, to discuss a complicated and difficult halachic question that arose in Kiryas Joel. For an extended time they went through all the details of the question and the opinions of the poskim on the subject.

At around 6:45, the Rebbe went on a Yom Tov visit to HaGaon Rabbi Aharon Mordechai Brisk shlit"a, dayan of Tashnad Monsey. A pleasant halachic conversation took place on several topics, and the Rebbe graced him with his holy blessing.

The Rebbe davened Mincha at around 7:15 in his holy home on the Sanz kat.
Between Mincha and Maariv, there was a reception for our chassidim from overseas who came for Yom Tov Simchas Torah in the Rebbe's presence.
